Filbert Way Residence
Krisana Park, Denver, CO
When we first met with the client they stressed the importance of cohesion between the new design and the existing midcentury ranch. The first step in accomplishing this was to remove a poorly constructed addition that was built a couple of decades earlier. We replaced the lost square footage with a master suite, family room, and elevated office area. Great consideration was given to the scale of the new work so that it wouldn’t overshadow the massing of the original design. We also took great care in planning the various levels of the home so that they not only conformed to the gentle slope of the site, but also help to define the various areas of the home. Heavy timber beams and tongue and groove 2x6 roof sheathing were used in the original design and our clients were willing to invest the money into replicating the condition throughout the addition. A unique masonry detail was also used on the west elevation of the home when it was initially built and that same detail was used in two locations on the addition to further the connection between old and new. An “accordion” style door system was used in conjunction with direct set windows to capture winter’s southern light thus creating a warm and cozy family room to enjoy in the winter. An exaggerated roof overhang just above the door and windows make for an equally enjoyable space in the summer by keeping light from shining directly into the space. The door when open helps to blur the connection between interior and exterior.
